The Only One (Poem)

I haven’t seen you since you were ten,
And we’ll probably never see each other again.
But trust me when I say,

I had to go away.
It was nothing you did,
You were just a kid,
Too young to understand.

On a day like today,
I should be making you cupcakes,
Instead, I sit and write and my heart aches,
Because I know you hate me,
And things will never be the same,
You can’t even mention my name.

I understand why you’d be mad,
It’s not easy to hear all this about your dad.
Even though speaking up is what I had to do,
I didn’t realize it would cost me you.

No, I’m not trying to turn you against your dad,
I’m just wondering, how things got so bad.

But just know,
I love you.
And even though I’m far away,
I want you to hear me say,
Happy Birthday lil sis,
You’re the only one I miss.
